Spa Pump and Motor Parts
A common problem with aging spas is pump failure. Replacing your spa pump with a new one can restore your hot tub for many future years of enjoyment. One tip to keep in mind is that if your spa pump has more than 2 or 3 years of use on it, replacing the whole pump instead of just the motor will save you both money and hassle in the long run..
Spa pumps have two basic parts: the wet side containing an impeller and the electric motor itself (the dry end) that powers the impeller to move the water.
How Do I Know If My Spa Pump Is Failing?
Here are some tell tale signs of a spa pump failure:
- A seized motor from a frozen shaft or worn out bearings can cause a buzzing sound that can potentially trip a circuit breaker because of the high current draw.
- A stuck impeller and a worn out starting capacitor can also create a loud humming sound.
- A whining noise can indicate worn out bearings in the motor.
- When pump seals fail, leaks and puddles of water can usually be seen around the pump.
Replacing these individual parts can be a real challenge. Often times, just finding the right parts can be difficult. If your pump is more than two or three years old, it’s generally a better idea to go ahead and replace the whole pump and motor assembly all at once. This makes for a much easier and reliable repair.

If your pump is still in good shape, you may only need a hot tub motor. Many above ground pools use the same type of motor as a hot tub but finding the appropriate replacement isn’t always easy.
